This special issue on Sudan was initiated in 2018 with the aim of studying the authoritarian practices of the Omar al-Bashir regime (1989–2019). Our intention was to draw on field research conducted over the previous ten years to analyze the forms of governance of a regime formed around the Sudanese Islamic movement, and subsequently the National Congress Party (NCP), and to examine its various organizational foundations.
