The works of Florence Bernault and Frank Dikötter greatly contributed to laying the foundations for research on prisons outside of Western societies from a historical perspective. However, despite their significance, for many years these works were not followed up by ambitious research programs based on contemporary ethnographies, notwithstanding some existing but all too rare publications. It was not until the 2010s that a more substantial range of studies of the prison world appeared under the collective impetus of European, Anglophone, and Francophone researchers, as well as researchers from other continents, in particular from Brazil.
