As this special issue amply illustrates, the ethnographic study of prison life in Africa is coming of age. In this article, drawing on almost two decades of experience conducting ethnographically-oriented research on prisons in East, West and North Africa (and other countries “beyond the West ”), we provide an in-depth analysis of this maturation process.
