By what mystery does the closest thing, the most everyday thing, become what we know least? The answer indicates the magnitude of the question: for it is the foundation of life. The mistake is to give in to the comfort of simplistic classifications, to think that the broom, because it is a lowly object, cannot lead us to the essential questions. Beware of the broom. It owns us as much as we own it. It hides secrets, treasures of intelligence.
