Alex de Waal’s book is rooted on sharp knowledge of the Horn of Africa, and it proves both a fascinating and demanding read on the articulation of violence, politics, and financial resources in this complex region. Claiming an ethnographic approach of politics, the author relies on his long first-hand experience of this region’s tormented history. He indeed directly participated in talks between armed players, states and international organisations, which allowed to look at the making of alliances, bargains and clashes from within. Such an entry allows him to focus on individual practices and on the circulation of these resources that determine the course of wars.
