This paper explores the effect of rice farming intensification on local politics in the village of Koyra, Northern Mali. In the wake of recent droughts and the creation of irrigation systems in the 1970s and 1980s, control over land and rice production became central concerns for the villagers. This study analyzes the political emergence of local entrepreneurs who, by providing land to landless peasants and participating in the management of irrigation systems, were able to constitute sizable clienteles and play an increasingly important role in the local political organization.
