Cities can be linked to one another even where there are few visible economic or political ties between them. This is indubitably the case in Central Africa. The article focuses on Douala, showing how little studied aspects of its daily life and urban culture link the economic capital of Cameroon to other cities in Africa and beyond. The author’s principal interest is in imaginaries of the city as means of gesturing toward and articulating relationships with emerging urban worlds across the globe.
